Starkville-MSU Symphony Public Service Announcement
The Starkville Symphony Orchestra will give its annual Christmas concert on Saturday, Dec. 9th, at 7:30 pm in the newly refurbished Lee Hall Auditorium on the Drill Field of Mississippi State University. The orchestra will be conducted by its Music Director, Michael Brown, and will feature the Symphony Chorus under the direction of Ted Beverly and the talents of two internationally-traveled soloists and the first annual MSU Concerto Contest finalist.
The concert will open with the ever popular Christmas Festival by Leroy Anderson. This orchestral favorite contains portions of numerous favorite Christmas songs and carols as diverse as Adeste Fidelis, Joy to the World, and Jingle Bells. The concert will close with the Symphony Chorus joining the orchestra in performing three choruses from G. F. Handel’ Messiah including the Hallelujah Chorus.
The body of the concert will feature Katie Ingram, senior music education major at MSU and a native of West Point, MS performing the first movement of Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto under the baton of her clarinet teacher and principal clarinetist of the SSO, Sheri Falcone. Dr. Michael Patilla will perform Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez, a concerto for guitar and orchestra. Dr. Patilla is Assistant Professor of Guitar and performs recitals around the world. Ms. Jan Grissom, Visiting Lecturer of Voice at MSU, will be performing holiday classics, Gesu Bambino and O Holy Night. She will also sing an aria from Messiah.
The final selection on the program will be the Christmas inspired Richard Wagner classic Siegfried Idyll. The program is a free concert.
