Starkville-MSU Symphony

The Starkville-Mississippi State University Symphony Association is pleased to announce two very special concerts for the month of February. On Saturday evening, February 10th at 7:30 in the newly refurbished Lee Hall Auditorium on the campus of Mississippi State University in Starkville, the Starkville-MSU Symphony Orchestra will present Roll Over Beethoven, a concert of some of the most well-loved of Beethovens works. Ludwig van Beethoven is likely the most well known of all art music composers in Western culture. The orchestra, under the direction of Dr. Michael Brown, music director, will perform his two most famous works. Symphony No. 5 in C Minor with its famous 3 short and one long motive is familiar to all music lovers, used in commercials, movies, and television shows, and represented V for victory during World War II. This will be the first performance by the orchestra of this famous and beloved work and will conclude the concert.

The second work on the program is the Emperor Piano Concerto which is also Beethovens Fifth Concerto for Piano. It is one of the most heralded of all piano concertos and is performed regularly around the world. Assistant Professor of Music at Mississippi State University, Dr. Rosangela Sebba, will serve as guest soloist for this performance. Dr. Sebba has performed internationally as a piano soloist and regularly tours South America, especially in her native country of Brazil. This concert feast of Beethoven delights will begin with Dr. Bruce Lesley, Director of Choral Activities at Mississippi State University, serving as guest conductor of the orchestra and leading the 135-voice MSU Concert Choir performing The Hallelujah Chorus from the Oratorio Christ on the Mount of Olives.

Lee Hall is the oldest building on the Mississippi State University campus and is at the head of the famed Drill Field on campus. The concert is free, but seating is limited to 950 seats and the hall is expected to fill quickly given the track record of the attendance at Starkville-MSU Symphony events.

On Tuesday, February 13th at 7:30 p.m., the Starkville Symphony Chorus under the direction of Ted Beverly, will present a Valentine concert entitled "We Speak of Love" in the Sanctuary of Starkville First United Methodist Church. Wendy Payton is accompanist. The varied program will be comprised of selections describing different settings of love in poetry and verse, including songs composed by David Childs, Jerry Estes, Sherri Porterfield, Allan Robert Petker, Anna Laura Page, Timothy Strang, David Dickau, David Rogers (with text from Samuel Taylor Coleridge), Henry Heveningham, William Blake, and Oscar Hammerstein II and from traditional Latin proverbs plus three books of the Bible: Song of Solomon, Hebrews and Romans.
Immediately following the concert a Chocolate Reception, hosted by the Chorus and open to all concert-goers, will be held in the Fellowship Hall of the Church.

Starkville First United Methodist Church is located on Lampkin Street on the west end of downtown Starkville.
