Starkville-MSU Symphony Association Ragtime, jazz, patriotic tunes to highlight 'Pops on the Plaza'
September 2009
The Starkville-Mississippi State University Symphony will be joined Sept. 29 by the city-campus' Brass Quintet for a performance at the downtown Cadence Bank plaza.
"Pops on the Plaza," a free event to begin at 6 p.m., is sponsored by the local Metrocast cable company office. Audience seating will be provided.
The bank is located at the corner of Main and Jackson streets.
Dating back several decades, "Pops" typically has provided an evening of jazz favorites. This year, the program expands to include other musical genres, with narration provided by Michael Brown.
In addition to heading MSU's music department, Brown is the symphony's director and the Brass Quintet's second trumpet.
Other quintet members, also MSU faculty members, include Richard Human on trombone; Michael Huff, first trumpet; and Cliff Taylor, bass trombone. They will be joined by symphony hornist Sheree Lence.
Now in its 41st season, Starkville has the distinction of being the smallest community in the nation to support a symphony orchestra for over 40 years.
